Unlawful Discrimination - Sexual Orientation or Gender Identity

Discrimination must occur in UNINCORPORATED SALT LAKE COUNTY. Call County Recorder’s Office 801-468-3390 with Address to confirm it is in the County

Complaint must be filed with Administrator in writing within 180 days after an alleged unlawful practice has occurred. Click appropriate link for complaint

Unlawful Employment Discrimination Complaint

Administrator has 5 working days to give written notice and a copy of the complaint to ‘Respondent”

Respondent has 15 working days after mailing of the notice to file a written, signed and verified informal answer to the complaint

Administrator will determine if alleged discrimination occurred in unincorporated Salt Lake County and is within the parameters of the ordinance

  • Administrator begins investigation
  • Request documents
  • Take statements
  • May Inspect premises
  • May request Mayor to issue a subpoena
  • Administrator schedules conciliation between “Complainant” and “Respondent”
  • Administrator facilitates the conciliation and a signed conciliation agreement is signed by the “Complainant” and “Respondent”
  • If no conciliation agreement is signed and the Administrator finds a violation of the Salt Lake County ordinance the Administrator refers the case to the District Attorney’s Office

A complaint can be filed for Employment Discrimination if:

  • The place of employment is in the unincorporated boundaries of Salt Lake County. (You may call the County Recorder’s office with the address to confirm)
  • The employer has employed fifteen or more employees for each working day in each of twenty or more calendar weeks in the current or preceding calendar year
  • The employer is not a religious organization or an expressive association or the U.S. Government or the State of Utah
  • A complaint can be filed for Housing Discrimination if:
  • The housing is in the unincorporated boundaries of Salt Lake County. (You may call the County Recorder’s office with the address to confirm)
  • The owner has 4 or more rentals
  • The owner owns 4 or more single family dwellings
  • The owner has sold 2 or more single dwellings within the past 24 months
  • The housing is not owned by a religious organization or a non-profit organization or a charitable organization or the U.S. Government or the State of Utah
